Cenozoic FOSSILS
50 Million-Year-Old Fish
Wyoming
Eocene Green River Formation
These fossils are the remains of an extinct genus of herring that once lived in fresh water lakes approximately 50 million years ago within the newly-formed Rocky Mountains. These fish and other organisms that died within the lakes sank to the bottom where they were covered with sediment and preserved for millions of years until their recent exhumation.
